It has only been two days since the launch of the all-new Perodua Alza and Malaysians seem to be going crazy for the new MPV. As per the automaker, the Alza has received over 30,000 bookings with 65% of the customers opting for the range-topping AV variant.

These statistics make us wonder if the hype around the 2022 Alza momentary or the MPV is worth all the attention? Is it a buy or a skip?

In this article, we’ll try and find the answer to this question, so stay tuned.

First things first, the all-new Alza is offered in three variant options - base X, mid-spec H, and range-topping AV. They are priced at RM 62,500, RM 68,000, and RM 75,500 respectively, on-road without insurance and with sales tax. Thus making the new version slightly expensive compared to the previous-gen model. However, it all gets justified with the big upgrade the model has received in every department.

This gives a prospective car buyer one reason to definitely check out the new Alza.

Moving on, the 2022 Perodua Alza has been merged with the Toyota Avanza/Veloz and Daihatsu Xenia, both the cars are top-sellers in Indonesia. So, all would share development costs, lower costs, and have a bigger volume of shared parts. Thus, translating into more advanced tech & features at lowered costs.

However, don’t think of the merger as mere rebadging. No, the Alza is specifically tailored to the needs of the Malaysian market.

This gives Alza another positive score.

The all-new Alza underpins the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform. Meaning Perodua has sourced the latest platform, engine, and transmission from Daihatsu for the second-gen Alza. Here are a few perks of the DNGA -

With such an efficient platform underneath, the new Alza surely has a strong base that makes it a comfortable and safe car.

So, a thumbs up for Alza here as well.

Let’s now talk about dimensions, the new Alza measures 4,425 mm in length, 1,730 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height. Its wheelbase and ground clearance stands at 2,750 mm and 160 mm respectively. Thus making it 206 mm longer, 35 mm wider, and 50 mm taller than before. Alza’s large body translates to more cabin space for both humans and luggage.

Figuratively speaking, the MPVs interior length with the 2nd-row seat pushed back is 115 mm more than before and the interior width is 35 mm more. Also, the rear door opening is 90 mm wider than before. The boot space with all seats up is 137 liters, a big hike from the older 83-liter.

This means, that there is no dearth of space on the inside and from the outside, it makes a strong impression with its stretched measurements.

Good going for Alza here as well.

Let’s talk about Alza’s under-the-hood configuration. Powering Perodua’s latest MPV is the 1.5-litre 2NR-VW mill that generates a maximum power of 105 hp along with a pearl torque of 138 Nm. As per the automaker, the new powertrain offers enhanced performance and 40% better fuel efficiency.

Paired to the engine is a D-CVT gearbox that made its lock debut with Ativan last year. The said transmission unit combines a belt drive with a gear drive, thus offering improved fuel efficiency, quietness, and acceleration.

Overall, it is a very efficient gearbox and together with the 1.5L NR engine offers a mileage of 22 kmpl.

Impressive, right? Well, it also offers three drive modes (H & AV trim) - Normal, Eco, and Power, selectable via a ‘DRIVE’ steering button.

The deal seems to get better and better.

Time to discuss the new Alza’s feature kit. Perodua has added several firsts when it comes to its latest MPVs feature kit. For instance, the range-topping AV model gets an electronic parking brake with an auto brake hold. Other features are -

It is clear that Perodua has pretty high standards for the new Alza when it comes to comfort and safety.

Surely, if a buyer is out there looking for a seven-seater, the all-new 2022 Alza is a must-check. From its justified price range to top-notch features & performance, this Perodua seems to cover all grounds.
